If you did a Google search for EMDR, you would find a lot of information about it being used to treat trauma–although it can be used for so many other things.
Sometimes memories can interfere with your life – but they don’t have to.
Have you been bothered by something that happened a long time ago? Do certain situations bring up memories of that event? Are you avoiding certain things because they trigger thoughts and discomfort?
Many people (TOO many) have suffered something that was traumatic in their lifetime. Trauma can be minor (for example, the death of a loved one) or major (surviving a horrific car crash).
Trauma symptoms can range from flashbacks of memories that seem to come out of nowhere and you can’t control, to nightmares, to being constantly on edge and nervous. Certain things can trigger these symptoms such as a song or a smell. Unfortunately, trauma is part of life, but continuing to suffer from it is not healthy and is something that should be addressed.
You don’t have to keep feeling this way!
When people have symptoms of trauma, it is because there was a ‘block’ in the healing process. EMDR helps to ‘unblock’ the path to healing by reprocessing the traumatic event and the negative associations that have formed. After successful treatment with EMDR therapy, emotional symptoms are relieved, physiological arousal is reduced, and negative beliefs are reformulated. Basically, you feel better.
Clients have described the traumatic memory or event feeling like it is further away. It is no longer so ‘close’ and disturbing. They haven’t forgotten what happened; but now when they think about it, it doesn’t have so much power over them. It doesn’t hurt like it used to.
EMDR treats more than just trauma
EMDR is scientifically proven to be effective in treating trauma, although it can also be used successfully for many more issues such as:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Grief
- Pain disorders
- Phobias
- Performance anxieties
- Poor self-image and low self esteem
EMDR therapy can help. There is hope.
We would be happy to explain more about EMDR and how it can help your specific situation during a 15- or 20-minute phone consultation.
